We’re holding a two-part event on the 27th March to celebrate the end of our winter Flash League!
We want our Flash Social Competition to be as accessible as possible, so here’s a quick & easy comp guide for anyone who needs it!
  • How do you start a Comp boulder?
  • How do I record my score?
  • Competition etiquette

Firstly, what IS a ‘Flash Social Comp’?

This Flash Social Comp is a zero-pressure, beginner-friendly competition with the majority of climbs ranging from grades 0-4, (with a few 5’s dotted around too.)

The Flash Social will begin at 6pm and run until 8.30pm, at which point we’ll ask everybody to gather at the Comp Wall to watch the greatly anticipated Flash League Finals!

How do you start a comp bloc?

  • All Orange routes are a part of the Comp
  • The Orange routes are numbered 1-25, those numbers correspond to the ‘Problems’ on your scoresheet
  • The numbers do not indicate difficulty, and you don’t need to complete them in a particular order!
  • The routes will also have four pieces of coloured tape to show you how to start a climb – the tape will show you the ‘four points of contact’ (where your hands and feet need to start)
  • ‘Zone Holds’ are also marked with tape. These are usually found half way through a route
  • Zone Holds only matter if you do not complete the problem – they just help distinguish
  • Zone Holds need to be held and used to count – not just touched!

How do I track my score?

  • First of all, scoring yourself is completely optional!
  • If you’d like to keep score, you can scan the QR code and use that scorecard to record how many attempts it takes you to complete each problem
  • Every Orange route is numbered, and those numbers correlate to the options on the scorecard
  • ‘Flash attempt’ means you completed the climb on the first try
  • You only get points if you complete the route in your first four attempts
  • You will not get extra points for finishing it in your 5th + attempt, we’ve done this to encourage people not to crowd around a single climb, letting everyone have a chance to climb everything!

Competition Etiquette

Here’s some basic competition etiquette to keep the comps running smoothly:

  • Give the people already on the wall priority – do not start climbing a different route if it overlaps with one in use
  • Stay off the mats while you’re waiting for your turn! While people are on the wall trying their hardest, they don’t want to be thinking about the people below edging closer and closer to the wall
  • If you’ve had your four attempts at a climb – consider moving on to different routes! There will be some climbs you like more than others, but limiting yourself to four-or-so attempts per route will give others a chance to try that climb too!
  •

So, that’s what you’ve got to expect for our Flash Social Comp! Make sure you come down and get involved, especially if you haven’t participated in a competition here before.

Entry is free for spectators so even if you don’t fancy climbing on the day – we encourage you to come along, have a bite to eat, and cheer on our finalists!

We can’t wait to see you all on the 27th March!

This is a poster showing how to start a competition boulder. It shows an orange route made up of 12 holds. The first four holds are marked with pieces of pink tape, indicating the 'four points of contact'. The 8th hold is marked with a piece of blue tape, this is the 'Zone hold'. The Final hold is marked with a single piece of pink tape, showing that this is the 'Top' hold, which you will need to match to finish the climb.
