We’re holding a two-part event on the 27th March to celebrate the end of our winter Flash League!
So, what do you need to know?

  • What is a ‘Flash Social Comp’?
  • What to expect from the League Finals
  • Turning up on the day

What’s a ‘Flash Social Comp’?

Our Flash Social Comp is a casual, zero-pressure event aimed at introducing new climbers to competitions!

You’ll have 2.5 hours to complete as many of the 25 comp-style blocs around the centre as you can! The majority of routes graded between 0-4, with a few 5’s/6’s dotted about too!

Although ‘Comp’ is in the title, you are welcome to take the competition element as seriously or as un-seriously as you wish. You can choose to fill out a scorecard as you go and record how many attempts it takes you – or you can ignore the scorecard completely and just get stuck in, trying as many or as few climbs as you fancy.

There won’t be prizes for the top scorers, but we’ll have a prize draw for everyone who enters their score – with lots of lovely prizes to be won!

This truly is an all-abilities-welcome sort of event, so if you haven’t taken part in a climbing competition yet, this is your chance!

League Finals

At 8:45, we’ll shepherd everyone over to the Comp Wall to watch the top 6 women and top 6 men from the Flash League rounds go head to head in the finals!

For those that follow competitive climbing, our finals will follow a Semi-Finals format.

For those who don’t know what that means, (and we don’t blame you, it’s hard to get your head around!) here’s what’s meant by semi-finals format;

  • There are 8 routes in total, 4 male & 4 female (they’ll be numbered M1, F1, M2, F2, ect.)
  • The Competitors won’t see the problems before their round starts – the first time they see the route will be during their “on sight” attempt!
  • Competitors get 4 minutes for the first boulder (M1 or F1). They then take a 4 minute break, before continuing with the second boulder (M2, F2) for 4 mins – and so on!
  • This format means that at some point, there will be as many as 8 climbers on the wall at a time.

This format is high action, full spectacle, and (in our opinion) the absolute best format for a live audience!

What do I need to know?

First thing’s first, timings.
  • Flash Social Comp climbing starts at 6pm and finishes at 8.30pm
  • Food / Bar / Cafe /Stalls are open throughout
  • At 8.45pm, we’ll announce the raffle winners & prep you all for watching the Finals!
  • 9pm, Finals kick off
  • We’ll wind down and aim to finish up around 10pm
Checking in on the 27th

On entry we’ll give you a wristband, a raffle ticket, and most importantly, a QR code that will take you to the online score card. You’ll only need the scorecard if you want to record your progress.

Once in the centre, you’ll need to look out for the orange climbs. We will have 25 of these orange climbs dotted around the centre, all of which  numbered from 1-30. Those numbers will correspond to the numbers on the score card, so if you climb no.20, you’ll need to scroll down the score card to find no.20 – easy peasy!

(If you have any concerns about the score sheet, or how to record your attempts – come & ask at reception and we’ll help you out!)

So, that’s what you’ve got to expect for our Flash Social Comp! Make sure you come down and get involved, especially if you haven’t participated in a competition here before.

Entry is free for spectators so even if you don’t fancy climbing on the day – we encourage you to come along, have a bite to eat, and cheer on our finalists!

We can’t wait to see you all on the 27th March!

This image is a photograph of a female climber from a previous climbing competition at Highball Climbing Centre. It shows the climber with both hands touching a hold above her head. She is facing away from the wall, smiling, presumably at other climbers waiting to go on the wall. This image is used as an example of routes set for competitions and shows a climber enjoying herself at an event.
